so yah, I want to be a foster parent, but I have some questions first. How old do you have to be? What classes and other things do you have to do to become one? Do you have to be married? And, I have questions about adoption. How old do you have to be? What are the requirements?? Do you have to be married?? What choices do you have when choosing a child? Can you choose whether you want to adopt a boy or a girl? And can you choose the race (I'm not racist, but I don't want them to feel too left out)???

  1. In my state In, there is a 6 week one a day course you have to take. It offers parenting and etc classes. Marriage isn't an option and although they say neither is money, you will have to prove you can take care of a child. They prefer to place a child with their appropriate race but if you want, you can choose. You must be able to pass a drug test and criminal background must be clean from everything. No exceptions. Babies and toddlers are the first to go, so try looking into adopting a a pre-teen or a teen. They were once babies also and wants what all kids want no matter the age. Of course you would have to be over the age of 18, employed, drug and alcohol free and a morally good person. The state will pay for you to get certified, but you would have to renew your certification every year. If not, you will have to go through the process over again.

  2. The age varies depending on where you live.  I have heard of 25 yo in many places.  If you do not meet the age qualification, in the meantime you can volunteer at state sponsored child care centers so that you can begin to understand what foster children need.

Go you!  You sound like a very special person who can open your heart to these special children.

  3. becoming a foster parent is a GREAT choice!! good job!! There are MANY children in the foster care system that really need homes!! good on ya!

  4. You have to be at least 21 in my state. The adoption agency will tell you classes required by your state. You have to be single or married [like Angelina Jolie did, she had brad adopt them later]. Adoption would be the same age as fostering.  You get to choose bopy/girl and where form.
