  1. Placement is NOT secure after CPL training.

  2. The best thing to do is go to a college that offers flight training WITH a degree, preferably a bachelors. There are many colleged that do this, one of the best known is Embry Riddle. The only thing about these colleges is that they'll make you pay an arm and a leg to attend, 75k-100k. It all depends on timing after you complete your training for commercial pilot jobs. As of right now, the regionals are growing very quickly and they need left seaters(first officers), but you never know what could happen tommorow or in a month or in a year that can cripple the airline industry again.

  3. I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelors in aviation sciences.  They have a very good flight school.  Big flight schools like Embry Riddle and Spartan are money pits.  They offer a 'bachelor' program, but as was mentioned in a previous post, they are kind of a joke.

Any major university that has a flight program will normally do a good job.

There is another option, you can get a bachelor's in a science field that is not exactly aviation and go to an accelerated training program that will have you getting your commercial license in just a couple of months.  These schools normally offer a guarantee course where you pay a certain amount (25k-35k) and get you finished in however much time is needed (there is an actual maximum amount of hours per course, but if you reach those maximums you probably should not be flying...)

  4. If you don't mind the military, the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado is regarded as the top flight school in the world. To get in though, you need to be in the top of your high school class, get amazing scores on the ACT, be active in extracurricular activities, and if that's not enough, be nominated by a congressman or the president. If you go this route you have a guaranteed job because you must stay in the air force for six years after graduation.

If the military is not for you, the best public school in the country is Purdue University in Indiana. Purdue's flight school is also very selective and it hard to get into. Purdue was the first school to offer bachelor's degrees in aviation and the first school to have it's own private airport. Finally, Purdue is the only school with a corporate aviation program built into it's flight program. As a student you may have the chance to pilot a Hawker 400 providing transport for the school president or other officials. Graduate from here, and according to school placement data, you have a 95% chance of having a job by the time you leave.

After that you have Embry-Riddle, which is the largest aviation school. It's large, but regarded mostly as a joke once you're out in the real world. Unless you go to the main campus in Florida, degrees are given out like candy.

The other top 3 schools are Southern Illinois University, University of North Dakota, and Western Michigan University. These schools are less well known, easier to get into, but still have great flight programs.

Good luck. Just remember that no matter where you go, you'll start out flying smaller aircraft and making little money. You have to work your way up to the big bucks.

  5. As much as I don't like it, Cessna seems to be the bird of choice for all novice training. I assume you are referring to civilian training, so the "top winger" aircraft is chosen. It is kinda slow but stable because of the nature of the wing above. This meens it has the nature of correcting itself, sort of, and has better lift than a bottom ( piper series ),, and certainly mid wing high performance sports craft. I would want to fly a Beechcraft myself. Anyways, f.y.i., AOPA is the best source of pilot training on the internet, which is located at www.aopa.org.
