  1. Find a flight school in your area and be prepared to shell out 6 to 8 thousand dollars for a physical, ground school and flying lessons.

    It doesn't come cheap.

  2. Be serious about it. It's not like driving a car, where you can pull over if something breaks (like you forgot to check the oil) or you can walk away from a fender-bender.

That said, it's not hard to do; it just takes concentration. If you're not old enough yet, hang out at the airport. Ask questions. Get a permission slip from your parents that you can carry, that lets interested local pilots give you rides (but have your parents check the guy with the airport owner first).

Get exposed to airplanes (or helicopters, if that's your passion). Be around them. Go to airshows and ask questions.

Check out eaa.org, and get into the Young Eagles program. (They give aspiring aviators free rides.) Check out 121five.com, too, especially the "Features." There's something there for every flight enthusiast, from engineering ideas to racing, to history, to how to manage your fuel. And you can look up crashes and find out who owns a particular aircraft under the "N-number lookup" in "Institutional Information." There are also links to free "Learn-to-Fly" sites and a fe really good photo galleries.

Sometimes, though you should never expect this, a pilot will let you actually take the controls. Then you're hooked.

Read about flying; practice on Microsoft Flight Simulator; hang out at the airport with a radio receiver and listen to the air traffic control.

Here's the punchline: with as few as 20 hours of flight time, you can fly your own LSA (light sport aircraft), and bring a passenger, even.

"If you want to fly and you're not flying, you don't really want to fly." (paraphrased from Dan Gurney, famous race car driver/designer/builder)

  3. What kind of pilot?
