I want to be a reconstructive surgeon....

I've always wanted to become a reconstructive surgeon, but I have a lot of questions about it. First, I was wondering how many hours do they work (full time and part time)? Second, would I be allowed to choose the hours I work? I'm asking these questions because when I get older I want to have a family and I want to be able to have a good relationship with my kids and my wife. I would also want to take my family to a lot of places such as amusement parks and other places. Thanks in advance.

  1. It takes years and years to become a surgeon, with the different specialties taking different amounts of time to train for.  By the time you are done with college, med school, your internship and specialty training, you will probably be on the late side of when other people start to get married and have kids.  Your career takes most of your time, and it is stressful and demanding.  It would probably be incredibly difficult to work full time and also be a family man.  I doubt many surgeons have the option of working part time, but you could look into that as an option.

  2. Surgeons don't have specific timings. They are on the call 24/7, and they get a 3-4 week break per year. Their lives are tough.
