Have you read some of the 'I want to be a teacher' posts?

After reading many of the posts, I have come to the conclusion that never, in a million years, will America recover from the disaster of allowing these folk into teacher training, with out at least sending them back to highschool for a couple of years.

  1. The worst part is our crazy belief that what you need to be a good teacher is a teaching degree. We don't seem to care if our math teachers know math, so long as they know how to teach. Crazy, crazy, crazy.

I have to say, the worst offenders seem to be history, math, and science. A lot of teachers just don't understand the material they are teaching. All the classroom management skills in the world won't let a person who doesn't understand math teach math.

The saddest part is that these teachers really do suck the love of learning out of kids sometimes, and that's a real tragedy.

  2. In the uk, there is a saying, "Those who can, do and those that can't,  teach." It is such a shame that teaching is given this reputation and i am not sure how bad things are in America but over here we are trying to make it more of a valued profession even though the pay will never be comparible to other professions like plumbing, electricians etc: Possibly though to answer your question, the reason it takes four years to train to teach is to cover some of the education that is missed and help to ensure that those who go in to the profession are at least able to spell!! Ps are you a teacher your self?

  3. It's a little scary, yes! The worst part is that so many people go into teaching just because they think it's easy and they want summers off.  Those people get into a classroom and don't know anything about teaching or keeping control of a large group of kids!
