  1. A veterinary assistant does not require any schooling.  A veterinary technician requires an Associates Degree from an accredited veterinary technology program (which takes ~ 2 years).  A vet tech will make a little more money, but overall it is not known as a "well paying career".  It all depends on where you work (demographics, research vs. private practice, etc.)

A good source for you to look at would be www.navta.net.  They talk about the differences, and also have a list of accredited schools around the country.

Being a vet tech is an extremely rewarding career, but it is also highly stressful and technical.  It is not playing with animals AT ALL.  There is a lot of math and science involved.  As a vet tech, one of my jobs is anesthetist, which means that I figure and draw up the anesthetics for the patient and then administer them.  If I am not focused and my math is wrong, I could kill my patient.

Being a vet tech is a huge responsibility, and you deal with the clients just as much as the animals, but it is extremely rewarding and I love it.

    Good luck!
