I want to be an ER doctor...?

I know it takes 13+ years with college, medical school, residency, internship, etc. I want to go to Xavier in New Orleans or Spelman for college. What will I major in and minor in? I think it's biology, but I'm not sure. What is the greatest, preferably black, medical school? For medical school, the black thing doesn't matter.

Thanks.

* FYI, I am not a racist because I prefer black universities, I just love the environment of them.

  1. I understand about your desires, and congratulations on chooseing to be a medical doctor.

You major in "Pre-Med", which means you have to meet requirements of the Medical School where you will attend to get your PHD in Med.  About any major in science, especially biological science will work.  Taking a foreign language would be a plus too.

You probably wont get a choice in being in ER or somewhere else, as hospitals make rotating assignments to ER work, it's not the best of duty.  Most doctors like to specialist in one area, like ENT (ear, nose, throat), Pediatrics, or Surgeon, something like that.

You may do ER work, while  an intern, or while doing other advanced taining under the tutelege of another doctor in your specialty.

You choice of college may also depend on where you can get a scholarship, many times the first college will be a State University, as they offer the most financial aid, and are cheaper.

John Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore has one of the best reputations, especially for working in the Black Community too.

I think Spelman will work for med School, I'll give you a reference below for it, and Hopkins

  2. There is no such thing as a premed major.  Biology is a very popular major for premeds because it covers nearly all of the medical school prerequisites, but you can major in actually anything you want.  Medical schools actually love to have people who major in something other than biology, it shows your diversity.  But you already have a lot going for you in terms of diversity, I will get to that later.

That being said, if you chose an alternate major such as English or other non-science major, just remember that you STILL have to cover all of the med school science prereq courses such as bio, anatomy, physiology, physics,chemistry.... which ARE NOT part of your major, therefore you will be taking extra classes in order to satisfy your major and the med school prereqs.

IDK about any black med schools, however, if I were you I would actually set my sights on a non-black medical school because they will be just itching to get you if you are a strong student.  Having minorities in med school allows the school to show how diverse they are and that is very important to them.  Besides that, you are female.  Double score for you.  If you do very well in college and on the MCAT's you can probably write your own ticket in the future.  So buckle down and take college seriously.  It will secure your future in medicine
