but the industry is going downhill because of oil prices. I am almost 17 and would love to get into the industry and be able to become an airline pilot by the time I'm 35, but would it be a good choice for a stable career/future?

  1. We don't really know the future of the airline industry in the future.  A lot of it depends on the price of oil.  If oil continues to rise, more airlines will merge or go out of business while ticket prices continue to climb.  With that, less people will fly and the airlines will need less employees including pilots.

A lot of people like the idea of being a pilot for an airline.  Once you have seniority, it is a great career.  However I read that airline pilots can work to 65 instead having to retire at 60.  That is bad for the junior people because it will take them longer to move up in their seniority.

You should go for it but just remember that the stability of your job will depend on how stable the company and the industry is.
