  1. look at the amtrak employment site

  2. http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentSer...

  3. getting a job in the railway buisiness works in steps over a long period of time.  First, you would have to start out in schooling/training, then work as a brakeman, then you move on to conductor, and then, after a few years of seniority, you can get the option to take Locomotive Engineer training in the simulators.  Overall it might take a min of ten years.

  4. Think this over carefully.  Hours are VERY irregular and so are days off.  It's h**l on a marriage.  Anyway, what I recommend is you go to the Johnson County Community College (Overland Park, KS) and enroll in their excellent conductor's school.  It's funded by BNSF and actually the Class 1 railroads supply many of the train crews for Amtrak runs.  You no longer have to work your way up from yard crew like that any more. m I personally know three people who went through the school and were licensed engineers within two years.  Generally passenger engineers have some solid years of experience either as a conductor or engineer on freight trains first.
