  1. Hi Carly.

I am a professional artist.  Here's what you need to know.

Drawing is good but it isn't that important.  You'll get the classes you need in college for basic drawing and illustration.  Most of this is computers now.  What you need is antiques knowledge, fabrics, color theory, paint science, design theory.

What is important is that you go to a good school.  You should go to a dedicated Art Institute, not a regular 4 year public school.  Go to Chicago Institute of Art, Savannah School of Art and Design.... etc.  Something dedicated to art, because this is where the big money jobs go to recruit new talent.  Plus you'll be more immersed with creative people who will inspire and inform you.  Good luck.

  2. My daughter is one, she loves it and makes great money. She started out working for JC Penny company in the factory where they design the clothes and make them and also window treatments and etc. She worked in the factory on a few months and was so good at helping them design they asked her if she wanted to be either a supervisor or interior dec. for their company. she was flown to california for one week and that was all  the training she needed. They book the ppl and send you out, it would be a great way to get a nack for it to start your own business, also you could keep a list of your clientel while working for a company. You go girl, you can do it, not hard at all!!!!

  3. I am an Interior Decorator and it's a very rewarding career.  You can be self employed or work for a store.  My choice was to work at a furniture store...I have no talent in drawing but if you can draw a stick figure you can draw a room.  Since I work in a store my customers come in and ask me to do a "house call" which leads to the clients buying furniture.  I make on averarge of $125-135,000 per year.  There are schools that train you for this career and also most technical colleges offer courses.  In my job I help people place furniture in their rooms..I go with a room planner to their homes and graph paper,  Measure the rooms and place the magnetic furniture pieces into the room..which i have drawn on graph paper..no I am not talented or an artist..but .it's all about the scale.  You then educate the clients in the different fabrics and what is suited for their life style.  If your store handles draperies after going to school you will be able to measure and also help them decide what type of curtains will compliment their furniture.  I started my career in a lighting store helping builders select the proper lighting for their model homes..also helped customers pick out lighting.  You learn about color, room layouts, different styles of furniture from traditoinal all the way to contemporary..you will learn to help people with their flooring and carpeting.and sooo much more....it all adds up to having fun and enjoying yourself.  You ask if it is fun..I can't wait to get up and go to work every single day..it's never boring and never the same from day to day.  I found  a site that may be fun for you to look at..so enjoy yourself and consider this as a very lucrative career..as I said..I sell the furniture also..make a commission, bonuses and spiffs..www.fabjob.com

I wish you the best of luck and if you like people and working in a creative industry..go for it..you have nothing to lose and so much to gain...
