  1. watch hgtv, or dig network or just go to the websites.try a project

  2. Go to college and major in interior design.

  3. I think it is best to specialize in something personally. I have worked the same jobs as 4yr interior design graduates so school is not the only answer. I have however gotten an AA in interior design from the Art Institute of Portland. Work is another route I would highly recommend, maybe you could assist a designer for awhile or work in a furniture store.

    Get Experienced!!!

I found Lighting to be amazing and that was what I have pursued as my specialty. Not that you have to do the same, but an amazing space is not nearly as amazing if it poorly lit.

  4. Most colleges now have it in the curriculum with an art major. Be sure to take a lot of art design and study the go-green design; they are the in thing (we talking energy saving devices and eco happy flooring etc. i.e. bamboo floor vs oak.)

Remember, the building economy has crashed so alot of people are keeping the old place and remodeling so ride the wave!  And intern! that means work for free at an architect studio; they will give you a resume.  Find a group of college friends that are creative, not just beer buddies, the creative fims often-times are start-up arch slash interior designers from art school. It doesn't hurt if you travel (or your parents) in a circle of doctors, attorneys etc....they can afford to hire your firm.  Any arch. firm loves a rainmaker.

  5. First and foremost - you must learn to check your work. You are in eleventh grade.  Mispelling an easy word like portfolio is unacceptable in the business world.  No one will hire you if there are mistakes on your portfolio or advertising material.  Get into the habbit of doing things correctly wherever you are.
