Study the teams you play a lot. Never! bet on a machine except as a "Flier". Like dropping $ 100 when the Megabucks is 25 million. Never play the lottery but in the same way. Only play "floating" craps games, betting against the shooter. Only play 21 against the "shoe" (more decks the better). There are many valid reasons for this and it is fact. Only play a set percentage of your stake in any session. When losing, walk away !! When winning, increase your wagers. (always keep a profit from a winning bet). Learn to hate gambling. Learn to hate money. That way you don't let either the action or the winning and losing affect your judgment. Study each game and know it well.

There are a whole lot of interesting answers in response to your question.  Poker players (of which I am one) will say poker. Black jack players (of which I am one) will say black jack.  Sports gamblers will say sports book.  Horse handicappers will say that....etc...etc...see where I am going.  Your question is like me asking complete strangers what should I do for a living.  Try a little bit of everything and find out what you like and what y ou are good at, heck, it only takes you winning the mega millions lottery once to be a good lottery player (if you are looking at the long term gains).  

I agree with some of what has been stated, house games have everywhere from a slight advantage, to a monster advantage (yet I still play some).  Learn about what you are going to play before you play, learn the math.  Remember in school when you were sitting in math class thinking "why do I have to do this, I am never going to use it other than simple adding and subtracting?"  If you want to be a good gambler, you better know math, all legal gambling, that I can think of, to some extent or other, has a mathematical foundation, learn math.

Even handicapping ponies or dogs is nothing more than a mathematical probability based on the info you know about what you are handicapping. No matter what you choose.

One thing that has only been briefly alluded to, by one of your answerers, yet is probably the most important thing in the world for a sucsessful gambler is ..........are you ready?.....MONEY MANAGMENT you can be one of the best in the world at any game you pick,  look at Mike "the mouth" Mattasow or Stu Unger, and still be broke all the time if you can't manage your bank roll, not the first shred of advice offered in all the answers will do you a bit of good.  Good luck.

I've been gambling for a living for 18 years. 80% of the people who try this end up losing. 18% end up making a living but they work as hard as if they had a job. 2% of us actually do very well. So it is no easy.

You need to figure out what you are good at. The only criteria is that it must be a non-house gambling venue. Anyone who claims they are a long term winning player against a house game is either lying or delusional. It is impossible to beat a house game without cheating.

My suggestion is learn poker. The quality of the play is really bad for the last 4-5 years so the skill level required for entry is fairly low.
