ok, i live in chicago, illinois. I want to be home-schooled for my sophomore year, and have NO clue as to where begin.

Does a PARENT have to teach you, is it required for it to be a parent to teach you? also, what would i tell the HS i just attented my freshman year at? ummm, would any paperwork or any thing of that manner have to be filled out? how would i be graded, and what subjects would be like mandatory, if any?

if you can help me out, it would be very highly appreciated...

please and thank yuh....

  1. A parent doesn't HAVE to teach you depending on the curriculum I believe. I've used one where I watch a video of a class and that worked alright. And i dont think you would have to tell the high school anything really but I'm not sure... but you may want to see if there is some kind of home school supporting school around your area that basically just lets you do your school and has you come in like once a month or something for grades or come in for certain classes. I know alot of people that use things like that. Hope that helps some!

  2. Illinois does not have a free online charter but it does have a Virtual High School that might be affordable. There are also other online schools that are private( some can be expensive while others are very affordable) so it just depends on what you are looking for. There are 2 online programs  that are not free but very affordable called Progress Academy and CLASS. There are also text book based home school programs that you can buy.

  3. There is another option, unschooling. Unschooling is where you follow your passion. No books, no memerizing useless facts. A child doesn't need to be forced to learn. Children want to learn. Children are naturally curious. When you need to learn something you do. For example, I know people who take 4 years of foreign language in high school. They got really good grades. Today, ten years later, they can only remember select words and were never be fluent in it. On the other hand, I know someone who was moving to Spain. It took him 9 months to learn the launguage. I have heard him speak it to others.

As for legality, check out local unschooler, can't find them well try http://www.northsideunschoolers.org/ North side unschoolers. They can answer all you questions and you can network with them.

  4. Hi itachi_5832,

You want to make sure you get good education and remain happy with your decision. However, you should read the 2 articles below to make your final decision. The first one gives you ideas as to how to go about it with pros and cons involved and the second article describes one specific incident that happened in Philadelphia. Hope this helps. Good luck !
