  1. The only way you'll know is if you ask.  Every dr is different.  I was induced with both of my kids.  They decided to induced me on my due date with my daugther and they let me choose to be induced at 39 1/2 weeks or wait till 40 1/2 weeks (if I didnt go before then and they only induce on wednesdays) I chose 39 1/2 weeks and was only in labor for 4 hours (the dr said I would have went into labor that day even if I hadn't been induced anyway).  My 2 drs dont like their patients to carry more than a few days after their due date if they can prevent it because the babies oxygen supply gradually decreases the longer overdue you are, especially if you are carrying a big baby (mine were both 8 1/2 pounds) and the risk for cord entanglements goes up as well.

On the other hand my best friend whose baby was due 5 days after my youngest was couldn't be induced until 42 weeks (different dr).  She ended up going into labor 5 days after her due date though.

I would just ask and see what they say.  Good Luck!

  2. I wasnt dilated at 39weeks, but my cervix was completely thinned so my dr want to induce me then, but i told him that i want to wait another week ... and I didnt even dilate at 40 wk, he wanted to induce me again, but i still want to wait another week, but he said i shouldnt wait ...so there i had an induction 2 days after my due date ... when u get to ur 40 week u can request for an induction ..1-5 days over due wont hurt ... not every overdue baby end up like that baby ..

  3. Theres no such thing as overdue. Babies are born on their own developmental schedule, and infact Inducing can lead to foetal stress.

Let the child be born when its ready. Its better for its own health.

  4. I asked at my 38th week and they set a date for 3 days after my due date. All you can do is ask and the longest I would ever go over due is 2 weeks then I would get a second opinion and get induced by another DR. Good Luck

  5. There are risks with being induced too.

  6. There are more risks with being induced that with going overdue!  The longest most doctors will let you go over is 10 days, I was induced at 10 days post-due.  Remember, a due date is just an estimate.  Being induced raises the chances of you needing a c-section by about a million percent (not an exact figure but it's very high), can lead to fetal stress (including passing meconium), and maternal stress and fatigue (it is in no way similar to the natural laboring process.)  For my circumstance, once I hit my due date, I went every couple days to be monitored, including checking the baby's heart rate, at 7 days post-due they did an U/S to check to see that everything was looking all right...at 9 days post-due they had me come in, did another U/S, examined me (still no dilation or effacement) and scheduled the induction the next morning.  What happened to the women you know is a horrible but rare circumstance.  Have a little faith in your physician, he/she will do what's best for you and your baby.  Good luck

  7. you need to talk to your doctor about setting up an induction date. they may do it, and you might actually go into labor before your induction date.

my doctor considers induction requests once youve hit 38 week, but each doctor is different so you just need to ask at your next appointment- or call the office tomorrow

  8. My DR for my 6th child  insisted I be induced  at my 38th week check up.... for his own personal reasons... he didnt want to get bothered with calls at 2 am.... I was furious.... why induce so early... nothing was wrong at all with my pregnancy whatsoever.... Some DRS will do what they call stripping of the membranes at 38 weeks -- that helped get me go into labor without the drug inducement... you can ask about that procedure but let me tell you its quite painful but its a quick procedure.. they basically run a finger or 2 around the cervix and strip away membranes and it usually gets your cervix to start dilating.... Good Luck. Hope you have a fast labor...... CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  9. I'd ask your doctor, as everyone is different. My doctor wouldn't induce unless it was medically necessary (such in my case, blah. I had pre-eclampsia), but my co-workers doctor set her induction date three days before our due date (we were due the same way) just to make sure she didn't go over, but only if she was dilated a little bit. With no dilation or anything, that increases the chances of a failed induction and a c-section. Plus, pitocin supposedly makes contractions worse... which they sure did hurt like crazy, lol.

However, some people go on and have good inductions, so... I'd just talk to your doctor! :-) Good luck!

  10. don't do it!!!  the baby will come..  stillbirth is far more rare than you would expect.  Induction is the worst, and i wouldn't wish for anyone to experience it..  ESPECially if you're not dilated any yet.  your body is just not ready.  induction works best if you're already dilating.

good luck.  just hang in there, its really only a few more days..

  11. Mine wouldn't/didn't. Good Luck! I also went from 0 to baby on my due date for my first. My 2nd was 2 weeks late. GOOD LUCK!

  12. i wanted to have my baby in oct so the doc is inducing me at 38 weeks. they should do anything you ask if there is going to be no harm done

  13. What you're dilated to right now has no bearing on when you'll give birth. Some women never dilate until they are in labor. Some walk around dilated to 3cm for months. A good doctor will not induce you at 40 weeks without a reason. There are too many complications. Most first time mothers do not give birth until 41 or 42 weeks. If you are that worried about it, you can ask for a non-stress test.

  14. Some doctors will, mine wont..im 41w3d and i should be getting induced sometime this wk but he hasnt said yet. Since nothing is wrong then they usually wont induce you until you are 41-42 weeks...

  15. Probably, just make sure you understand the risks of being induced.  Your friend's doctor did the best job he could of weighing the risks and benefits of induction.  There's no way to know that induction could have saved the baby.

40 weeks is not overdue.  Due dates are just estimates, not something to enter into your Blackberry.  Don't get too excited about your due date.  Just talk to your midwife/OB about your fears.  let me tell you from experience, pitocin induced contractions suck, and they're hard on baby too.  In general, there's more risk involved with induction than with waiting for nature to do its thing.

BTW, inductions very often lead to emergency Cesareans, which is another thing you want to avoid.  It's far better to let nature handle this.  When will your baby come?  Paul Simon said "the information is unavailable to the mortal man."

  16. Ask your doctor.  My wife had Grade 3 placenta (placenta aging), so we didn't want to wait till due date (even though doctor was fine with waiting till 40 weeks).  We were extremely worried about stillbirth, so made the plea to induce. So, scheduled induction at 39 weeks, but baby decided to come naturally early at 38 weeks :)

Even without medical reasons, you can certainly ask your doctor to induce at 40 weeks.  Ask about placenta aging and still births and highlight your concern - mention your friend as you just did.  Many women schedule C-section around or just before due-date as well. The doctor will probably agree to induce.

BTW, induction is not all that bad.  If you are going to take epidural / pitocin to speed delivery (even if you went to labor by yourself), that is partial induction as well.  There is obviously a chance that induction/labor doesn't progress as rapidly and you end up with c-section, so you need to be mentally prepared for that.

  17. Huh, well my last routine doctor vistit, my obygyn just said, 'okay, times up! Lets set a date"

I wasnt even at the schedualed due date yet, that was still a few days away. I guess she just wanted to have it done on her time.

    Some doctors are like that.

  18. I was induced the first time, trust me you don't want to go there.
