  1. Usually they mean while you are in college to work in a health environment as a volunteer to get hands on experience/observation.  My friend used to volunteer at a hospital helping patients with routine things.

  2. They could mean voluntary work looks good on college applications.. like when you do your first four years. They could also mean volunteering once your in college in the medical field to gain experience.

Colleges love to see volunteering on your application. You can try things in your highschool (my high school had a volunteering club as well as best buddies). You can also look to volunteer with the special olympics, united way, jimmy fund, heart assoc, diabetes assoc, cancer assoc.. etc. They are always looking for volunteers for events that they do.

Once you are in college, experience is experience. Whetherer it be volunteering or you find a job in the medical field, med schools will soak that up. When you are in college you can always check with your advisor, but I am sure a doctors office/hospital would let you do a job shadow as well.

Good luck! I just passed my boards for nursing and am a new nurse at a local hospital of ours. The medical field is tough... but you seem dedicated and motivated. I wish you all the best!
