  1. Go to Walmart, get an Uglystik combo spinning reel and look up ways to fish for carp on Yahoo Answers.

Fishing for carp is all about sitting and waiting.Very relaxing.

  2. Talk to the guy at the local bait shop. What you are fishing for will dictate as to what rig (type of hook, sinker and maybe a bobber) you will want to use.  For most beginners a $30 or so combo like the Zebco 33 rod and reel will work fine. Hang out at the local marina and talk to the fishermen coming off the lake. Show enough interest and ask enough questions and they may even give you a sample of what they are catching their fish with.  Bass fisherman are like that. You never know you might even get invited to join them on the next trip out, don't count on that last bit but you never know. Good luck and enjoy.

  3. bait fishing is relaxing. hanging a worm or another bait designed and produced for catching that one specie of fish you want to Target is time absorbing and can be vastly rewarding. Fishermen who are hunters (predators) looking for the top of the food-chain in the waters they frequent spend their whole life reading about those fish they seek and me for example I use live bait rarely as I like to cast and retrieve. I like making artificial baits look better and more enticing to the specie I am targeting. Of course here in Ca. there is so much to target. Read the book Fish Have no Hands it is a primer to get your mind in  the state of wanting to learn as much about fishing as you can. Good fisherman aren't lucky like most all others are Good fishermen spend the time learning about the fish where it lives how it feeds what it feeds on and puts themselves into that place with the right bait at the right time looking for each cast to produce that wondrous fight only a wild trying to get away fish can give you. Start at the library read about fishing and knots and how its done (right) then seek your rods and reels according to the specie you want to target line and reels are really designed and used for specific targets. You see, fishing is understanding where to be when and with what and then hoping that the time and money you spent getting there pays off (and maybe a fish stops by for a bite.)

  4. go to walmart and but things u need, ill make a check list

    hooks(all sizes)

    pliers

    wire snips(for cutting line)

some fake worms, frogs, other bait

mabey some lures(after awhile ull get a colection of them)

u dont need to buy expentsive stuff

but use the eagle claw brand for hooks

and a zebco or ugly stick rod and reel combo, both are good brands

if ur fishing for whatevers biting just use nightcrawlers, for bass fake worms will work, and catfish use chicken liver or gizards(nasty but ull get over it)

  5. First of all...don't go to Walmart.... a true American hates Walmart.

I recommend going to Gander Mountain -  They will actually know what they are talking about -  the workers are very helpful ... unlike Walmart they don't treat their workers like crapola, and they don't sell America out (yes another Walmart dig)  The workers at Gander Mountain will even be able to tell you places near where you live that you can fish.

First start of deciding what type of fishing you'd like to do.   Narrow down some locations near by that you can fish.  Buy a nice rod and reel, line, hooks, pliers, lures.

I enjoy fishing in Powdermill Park -  brook trout fishing - it's relaxing, you can walk up and down the creek or sit there in a lawn chair.  You can fly fish (difficult) or use a standard rod and reel - using a small lure or hook and worms (use the real deal - not rubber worms).

Someone mentioned carp fishing - it can be fun but - big fish - big fight - but you can't really eat them -  you can always go to the canal and fish for them.

If you know someone with a boat - I would recommend trolling for fish...it's where you motor around really slowly while your line is out...and you just pull the lure behind the boat.

  6. There are many types of fishing that can be done or you can specialize in.  Before you start to buy tackle I think it best you look at mags or talk to tackle shop owners so you can get a idea of all the different sorts of fishing out there so you can make your mind up .

  7. Well to start you have a tremendous salmon & trout fishery in lake ontario and some nice smallmouth bass fishing also, so the surrounding rivers and streams should also hold some good fishing in store for you. I would start by researching at the following site :www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/fishing.html. Here is a wealth of information to explore. The quickest way to learn about the fish and equipment would be to hire a guide and explain to him what you would like to do. Hey... tight lines and welcome to fishing!
