  1. Not very much.  You should make sure the degree in in education.  If you work for a preschool provided by a school district you will make teacher's salery with the benefits of the district.  Otherwise if you teach in a private setting the pay usually stinks and there are no benefits.  My degree is called Child and Family Studies.  It was out of the Home Economics Department.  I have worked in several day care centers which the pay is not much over min. wage, it's based on education and experience.  But usually day care possitions are full time (40 hours).  Right now I work as a teacher's aide.  It is not 40 hours but I do have health insurance for my family.  Because I have a bachelors I can sub, and teacher sub pay is a little bit more than my current pay, but subs don't have the benefits in our school district.

It does make me happy to see you want to to pursue this field.  But it is not a money making career.  I'd say, try and get on with a school district.  Many of them now have a preschool for all program, and it is a new program and they are seeking good qualified teachers.  The salary veries from district to district.

  2. I'm guessing your majoring in Child Development?

Most preschools require you to have about 12 units in Early Child Development.  In California, preschool teachers make about 35,000 a year, but of course that's with some schooling.

  3. They don't make much money.

Here are the kind of classes you would have to take. The name of the classes will be different.

    Introduction to child development

    Early child development

    Communication in the Preschool

    The Preschool child

    Infant and Toddler classes

CPR and First Aid    (a must)

    Administration classes

    Developmental Psychology

Discipline class  (The different ways to discipline children

    Child abuse class    (a must)

6 units will get you a job as a Teacher Assistant

12 units will get you a job as a Qualified Teacher

I have been a Teacher for 20 Years and I also have been a Director.

Also talk to a counselor and find out what classes you would have to take first.

The child abuse class will help you to identify abuse in a child and what to do if you see a child that has been abuse.

Any Person that goes into child care have to take these kind of classes.  I hope this will help.

  4. Some teachers make more than other teachers in the same job! You can check out headstart, which pays more since it is a government job for low and middle income students. They also help you to get your degree!

  5. If you will be working for a public school, you can find out what you will be making very easily.  Get on the website of any public school in your state and look for the section titled "Public Information".  Under that heading you should find the salary schedule for teachers.  If you don't find it that way, go to the school and ask them for a current one.  I read somewhere that the average teacher salary in Texas is around $39,000.  You will start out, of course, at less than this, but pay goes up incrementally each year and also as your education level increases (master's degree and beyond).  Also, consider that what you find to be a starting salary right now will probably (hopefully) increase a little in the four years you're in school.

In my state, salary levels vary across the state.  For example, in some school districts, year one teachers are paid $29,000.  Then there are some districts in more affluent areas of the state where you can find year one teachers earning $39,000.  It may seem like a no-brainer to try to get hired by the better-paying school, but  sometimes states have loan-forgiveness plans that cancel some of your loans if you work for a number of years in low-income areas.  You'll learn more about all of this in your teacher-ed. program.

    Good luck!

  6. Preschool teachers in Private settings make little, but the job is rewarding on a different level.

Also it is great for people with children because discounts are often provided.  I make a little over $20,000 an year but my childcare is free for 2 so that accounts for about another $13,000 a year
