I want to become an advertising creative... but?

but I have been offered a very good job (account) in a big agency. Seeing as it is not easy to work in advertising... Should I accept the job offer and just try to get into the industry later or should I say "no, thanks" and get experience as a graphic designer in a small studio? I am 27.

The question might sound funny but, being Spanish, I do not know the UK industry enough to understand what is the sensible thing to do. Any answer will be really appreciated. Thanks.

  1. If the job is good in accountancy why not accept t ? at the age of 27

you are not to old to change career paths now, i don't think the yahoo community can help you.

Do what YOU want, what you will enjoy more. Don't be influenced by other people's input.

  2. advertising is a very competitive field, i suggest that you except the very good job account, get some experience, money and ideas. Then there is always time later to do what you want to do, then you will have contacts, cash and experience. Its the best thing to do.

  3. The word 'account' has several meanings in advertising - it can relate to the accounting function (recording monetary transactions), or it can refer to the client (each client is regarded as an 'account').

If the job is to do with finance you would be taking a chance as the finance team don't get involved with the creative team and there isn't much client contact.  However, if you are being offered a job as an 'account manager' you would be very involved with the client as you would be the prime link between the creative team and the client - a job that definitely links in with the creative function and one which would enable you to influence the creative because you are the one who gets the client's instructions, interprets them to the creative team and takes creative proposals back to the client for approval.

As a graphic designer with linguistic abilities you could be a very valuable account manager. If this is what you are being offered, I advise that you take it. Once you are 'in' the agency, you can show your portfolio to the creative manager and see how he/she responds to your work.

    Good luck
