  1. The best thing I ever did for my public speaking was to take a couple of Communications courses at the junior college.

  2. Little things:

Get words like, "um, like, you know, etc." out of your vocabulary.  They are space fillers, and they are distracting.  It's ok to take a moment to collect your thoughts.

Don't rely on general words like, "things,"  use specific words like "tips, suggestions, strategies, etc."

Use hand gestures with caution.  Avoid flapping and overuse of hand motions.  Only use hand motions when they enhance your message, or when you need to regain your audience's attention.  Othwise they should be relaxed at your sides, or folded in front of you, whichever feels natural.

Do take time to think before you speak.  Make sure you know what you're going to say.

In personal conversations, speak in a quiet tone and trust your partner to listen to you.  Also, listen three times more than you talk.

In public speaking, speak loudly and clearly.
