I am 26 years old, and in the middle of a graduate degree in economic research, in scandinavia. After working in the kitchens as a student temp, I have slowly come to know that this is the career that I truly aspire for. So I want to shift my career. In the culinary schools that I googled... there seems to be different types of courses starting from 6 months to 4 years. What type and duration of course should I opt to start with? Does a degree in economics matter in getting promoted to the top?

  1. You will be learning for the rest of your life so pick an internationally recognised course. Then you may work anywhere.

Oh, and can you make me a bacon sandwich please ?

  2. Any additional education will aid in your success and in your going further faster, as for an Executive Chef that is a position gained by years in the trade, steady advancement up the chain of command and at the pinnacle of the mountain is that position.

I myself decided I want to work on the floor and still manage to cook daily and be involved in the day to day running of the kitchens or one unit, as the sous chef I was the man in the middle, working with and supervising the cooks and also working closely with the Executive Chef in expressing his ideas, wishes and ways of doing things.

So I would recommend a mid range course then, get all you can and the Economic's degree will help you down the road when you have obtained the experience and background to become an Executive Chef..
