My family is moving to a new town, we will only be taking one car with us, so this is our shot at a fresh start of energy independence. We will share the car and want purchase new bicycles to use to commute to work and for errands when one of us doesn't have the car. The new town is a tropical environment (rain) and has lots of hills. Any suggestions on a good bike for this type of enviorment? I am not found of the hills.

  1. Mountain bikes are probably good for hills, road bikes are good for roads.

Fenders are good for keeping the rain and mud from splashing up a stripe on your backside. I think you can get fenders to add to a bike.

Or buy a commuter bike (expensive with all the trimmings) or "beach" "surf" bike with fenders (one speed and brakes on the pedals, not on the handlebars).

  2. Get a bike shop mountain bike, not the kind you buy at the local big department store.  Buy a city bike with a women's frame made for a woman.  Be sure to buy a helmet as that is a law in some areas and buy a pair of bicycle gloves to protect your hands from road shock and injury if you fall.  Handlebar mirrors are also great for commuters, and riding in general.

The bike should have low gears to help you handle the hills.  But in time, with enough riding, going up hills will be a snap and you'll be in great physical condition.

  3. They are called cross bikes or city bikes

    .. .. ..

They have straight handlebars on and do not have thin tires as do most touring bikes

    .. .. ...

And get a set of saddle bags for your bike

    .. .. ..

A good cable lock that is able to go threw all the wheels and onto the lock down security when you get to point "B"

    .. ... ...

And one or two water bottles for the frame you will take with you when you park and lock it at your destination

    .. .. .

And a speedometer to help keep you entertained when ridding ha ha ha

THAT YOU WILL slide OFF When you get to where you are going

    .. .. ..

No radio head phones some cities that is against the law to ware when on the city streets

    .. ..

And a cell phone encase you get a second flat tire and you only had one spare inter-tube

    .. .. .

  4. Trek FX

    Check here for women:

Click on Bike Path:  I'd recommend a 7.2/7.3 if you are not really sure it's what you want and a 7.5 to really get you going.  The thinking is that spending the extra money will not only get you a better bike but now you'll be more determined to use it everyday.

    Good luck and happy trails.

  5. congratulations, young lady! wish there were many more like you.

you are not fond of the hills, that is a pity. however, choose a machine with an efficient gear system that makes it easier on the hills. there are so much of choice that i am sure you will find one you like.

all the best to you, dear.
