I've been playing the piano since I was five years old (I'm now a junior in high school) and my family and friends keep telling me I should teach piano to young children. I REALLY want to (and could really use the money, ha ha) but I don't know where to start!! I plan on majoring in piano when I go to college. Does anybody have any good tips, books, or ANYTHING that could help me get started?? ANY help is appreciated!

  1. Hmmm...well if I were you, I would start by making some flyers/posters to post around town- that way, people will at least know that you want to start teaching. Maybe you could offer giving weekend lessons (depending on how busy you are every week once school starts up again) or just summer lessons for this summer only. They sell a lot of "piano teacher" books at local music stores *depending on where you live* so you can get ideas from those. If you take piano lessons from a professional teacher, then you can get an idea about what to do at each lesson and the amount of money to charge. Good luck on getting started! :D

  2. Hi, I was taking piano lessons from a freshman; she also started to play the piano at 5. All she did was to advertise herself online in the local listings, that is how we found her. I had my own piano so she came to my place for 1 hour and charged me $25 (Canadian). She did not ask me to buy any books since she thought that using the books she learned with were enough and I found them much better than the ones I eventually bought myself, they were just more efficient for me.

I was also taking lessons because my goal was to be able to play the piano at my church, thus, the client's purposes influence your lessons.  Other students would have other goals and purposes.  So she was very flexible that way.

I hope this helps a litle tiny bit.
