  1. I'd avoid WalMart... The bettas there are normally sick and/or dying on the shelves...

But if you have alot of time on your hands, buy a betta from WalMart, and RESCUE the poor thing!

I went there to get a male crowntail betta and we saw a female opaque betta that had algae growing all over it and it's container.

    It's horrible!

Try PetSmart, or your local pet shop.

  2. I have always purchased mine from Wal-Mart and to tell you the truth they live FOREVER!!! I am not going to lie, I am not the best fish carer and they lived for over 3years until one jumped out of the bowl and died. I had a female (Dead) and a male (Still alive). I really didn't change the water often and I fed them way to much. Betta's are very easy to breed you have to keep them in the same bowl let them mate then sepereate them because they will attack each other till the ydie and they will eat the eggs. I say go with Wal-Mart. I heard they are in good condition, better than a pet store because at Wal-Mart the fish are constantly being sold and are very well kept.

    Hope this helps!!!  :-p

  3. You're right - bettas are kept in horrid conditions. But that's pretty much everywhere. Bettas will fight if kept in display tanks together, so you'd need one tank per betta and that's not cost effective for any store.

Most stores sell only male betta - the ones in the little containers with long fancy fins. Females are sold sometimes - our Petco sells them - but you'll need one of each.

You should keep them in separate tanks - one each in a 5 gallon tank and 'condition' them. That is, keep the water pristine and feed them high quality meaty foods but don't overfeed! I used frozen bloodworms. You should do this for a few weeks until the male starts building a bubble nest, and the female looks somewhat fatter.

You'll have to put them together now - the female in the male's tank. YOU WILL HAVE TO WATCH THEM. The male will seem to harass the female, chasing her around. You'll have to keep an eye on them, and if she seems to be not like the chasing, you'll have to remove her. If she accepts, you'll see the famous Betta Bear Hug. The male will wrap himself around her, like a snake, and he'll fertilize the eggs as she releases them.

After they're done, the male will take the eggs and move them to his bubble nest, and you should remove the female. The male will care for the eggs and the fry until they are free swimming - two or three days after hatching. The male should then be removed and you'll need to start feeding the baby betta,

I use freshly hatched BBS - baby brine shrimp. I have a small 1/2 gallon used solely for hatching out BBS for my various fry. Other people get food by taking a wide mouthed jar full of tank water and placing some straw or grass in there and putting it in a sunny place. You can take a small spoonful of this and put it in the tank twice a day. After a week or two, you can graduate to powdered flake food - only a pinch once a day. After 6 weeks from hatching, the betta will be about an inch long and may have to be separated into individual containers.

  4. the ones from walmart dont work? Really?? I had four from walmart and they all lived for 4 years. but if u really dont like buying fish from walmart then dont. But it's usually not the store. Try getting one from a small local fish store, they take better care of them because all they do is feed and clean fish...so GOOD LUCK!!

  5. aquabid.com or a betta breeder. Make sure you have homes for them, and look at bettatalk.com, they have lots of info and bettas for sale.

Bettas from wal-mart don't work because they are too old (usually 1 year old) bettas need to be 3-4 months old to breed. Also, they are veiltails, and have really bad genes, you could breed blue and blue and get red, and they're hard to find homes for.
