  1. neon tetras are almost always imported from the amazon. the reason? they have extremely difficult breeding conditions. so hard that most breeders don't even bother trying to breed neon tetras.  if you want to breed fish, start out easy, try zebra danios or platys. both are fairly easy to breed, and available almost anywhere. once you gain experience, you can work up to harder and harder fish. for instance: a single zebra plecostamus costs almost $300. why? because they're hard to breed. neon tetras are so easy to catch in the wild, and they spawn in such vast quantitys, that its way easier to just catch them in the wild. (no the massed exportation has no enviromental impact)

i would also recommend setting up a breeding tank, as the gorami wil gladly eat the eggs and fry of tetras, danios, or platys.

  2. First you need to set up a small 4 gallon breeding tank with plenty of plants, (plastic or real). Use water from your main tank to cycle it aiming to match the water parameters of the two tanks.

Sexing tetra is relatively easy, the females are plumper than the males and more so when carrying eggs. When you notice the males showing a lot of attention to a particular female, you know she is going to spawn. You want her and a male of your choice in the breeding tank. Spawning won't be far away if he is showing interest, (no more than 48 hours). Soon as you see the eggs which will be scattered on the plants, remove the parents. Hatching takes 72-96 hours, but don't expect to see fry, they are tiny. First feed should be infusoria, moving to a branded fry feed then crushed flake.

Prime draw back? The young fish are worth nothing to you in terms of selling on and recovering your breeding costs. Trade can import them for pennies per fish, so you have no market. Even ordinary guppies retail for more than twice the price.

  3. first of all, you need a brown paper to wrap around your tank to give it the 'homey' feeling for the tetras. Then you have to make sure the water current flow is just nice for it. Make sure your water pH is suitable too. I'm not really sure of the exact pH level. But what i know is that you can use rainwater to stabilise your water pH level. Just a few rainwater would do. About 1/8 or less depending on your water pH.
