I am looking to build a HTPC and am looking for advice on what to put into it. I have seen alot of them on ebay and some various websites. I really want more HD space than placed in most of these computers and they cost several thousand. Is there any way for a novice to build a computer without s******g everything up or can I pay someone to do it and not be chargers thousands to do it.

  1. it really depends on what you are using it for, I personally bought a mac mini to use as my htpc, I paid around $550 and added an external hard drive via firewire to store all my media. Converted all my dvd's to .mp4 and now have over 200 movies on a hard drive all accessible through my TV. I use front row on the mac as the front end application to access media.

  2. Browse extremetech.com. They have occasional articles on building many different kinds of computers, including HTPCs.

Building a computer is pretty easy; all the pieces just snap or s***w together, and the connectors are generally of different sizes and shapes to make it easy. The difficult choice is what components to put in the PC.

  4. Here's a good guide.  You can of course use this as only a suggestion and edit as you need, but it's a pretty good setup.

It's kind of old, but the specs still work.  And the RAM price has dropped from $200 to $50.
