I want to build a canoe any advice how to get started, materials?

canoes are ridiculously expensive. I dont think I will be able to carve a tree canoe.

Canoes are expensive no matter how you build them but if you do want to pursue this, check around your area for canoe clubs.  Many clubs will have canoe building sessions during the winter months.  This provides an opportunity for you to have access to problem solving ideas, from many different people, throughout the building process.  It's a good social atmosphere as well.
