There is nothing back there except a dirt/sand mix on the ground. Should i build a cinderblock wall or a wooden fence. Which would be safer since they would not connect to anything(shed on one side, house on other). Which would be easier? thanksabout 30 feet in total length,

  1. i would go with the wooden fence.make sure you treat the wood for the weather conditions.wood looks nicer.

  2. Chainlink fence would be the least expensive - make it 6' tall so the dog can't jump/climb out.  You may also need to put some pavers around the inside to keep it from digging out.

  3. The wood fence would be easier to install. Use metal posts to avoid the wood rot on wood posts. I saw a show on HGTV where they revamped a woman's dog run and they used a crushed granite as base for the run, compacting it with a little concrete mixed in to give them a solid but porous surface for the dog (so he would end up in the mud all the time).

  4. easiest chainlink.  next wooden, last blocks.

  5. If you use cinderblock you will have to pour a concrete foundation to support the weight.Wood would be the least expensive of the two,and the easiest. You can also consider pulling a tight cable about six foot high across the area and clip a leash to the cable so he can run back and forth without getting tangled and you won't have to build any walls. This is what i use and it works great and the dog loves it
