However I have noticed a large bee doing regular trips to the stump of the pampas grass, and I don;t know why or what I should do? I don;t want to hurt the Bee, but I need to clear this part of the garden. Any advice?

  1. get a spade and dig it up bit by bit

  2. I wouldn't burn the pampas grass,this won't destroy it.

Setting fire to this shrub is the traditional way to make it grow more strongly.

Cut the pampas grass back to ground level and apply Round-up,that won't harm insects and will eventually kill the shrub.

  3. if you have a bee hive you would see and hear alot more action and they wouldnt let you close enough to have a look. you could wait and be sure there isnt a nest and then burn it, but this wont kill the pampas grass only get rid of the original growth. how ever if you do want to kill it burn it and then dig it out, if its big then get ready for a workout...

Open the link below and contact the nearest bee keeper to you to see if its a nest and needs to be removed

before you burn down the pampas grass.

By the way that won't kill the grass it will probably make it grow better.

I would put several layers of 6 mill plastic over it and make sure it gets no sunlight .   That's the way I killed mine.

  5. just do what you want to do the bee will keep away they are not stupid  life will go on

  6. Bumble bees do not make hives like honey bees and live in holes in the ground and trees. They are in decline. Sounds like you may have a family living among the pampas grass. If you can wait a season, they would be thankful. Cut as much of the leaves as you can but leave the base undisturbed. You're lucky to have a bumble bee nest in your garden.

  7. Please don't burn it, bees are in decline and it is nesting there.

  8. if your are sure there is only one bee and it's truly massive it's probably a queen jsut starting a colony - set it on fire after the bee leaves

i set several pampas on fire way out in the desert and boy do they go up so stand well back . if it's an enclosed or overhung area you'll have to find another method outside of burning it away as it could be dangerous, and we wouldn't want you to set yourself or your property on fire.

I would imagine the roots will still need to be dug out if you burn to stop regrowth so the spade alas is probably unavoidable.

    best of luck
