I wouldn't spend more than $11,000 on it unless it has had every required service (esp the 100k one). Generally the 540's are less reliable and break down alot more than the other 5 series.

5-series cars depreciate like crazy.  1999 5-series can be purchased cheaper than 3-series.

But be prepared to spend some serious money on repairs, maintenance, and general nuisances.  Reliability is poor.  The car is over engineered.  

If you really are interested in purchasing one, first go to some of the BMW user forums.  You'll get the picture.

I guess you should also check insurance quotes for the car before buying one, for example here: http://carquotes.sinfree.net

BMWs are usually expensive to insure.
