It might be that I'm not familiar with some terminology or that I don't understand the meaning of the letters (e.x. f/2.8D- does D change something?) I'm confused and definitely need help, please provide as detailed explanation as possible. Thanks!

  1. The f2.8 that you refer to id the maximum aperture of the lens, the smaller the number the faster the lens. So when we comparing lens, we normally compare the maximum aperture rather then the mnimum aperture such as f11, f22 etc.

The D is normally stand for digital, which means the lens is design for optimum optical performance for DSLR.

  2. Got to bestbuy.com or call the number shown on website for help or go to the store. or the nearest camera store close to you ask for help.

And check out Nikon online website.

  3. Lower f lets you do lower light pictures or add in depth of field shots, as it lets more light in. Lower the f the better really. As it's easy to let "less light in" or higher f value

You will end up seeing the lower the f the higher the cost :)

I'm not sure how soon your looking to buy as it sounds soon but be warned the d90 is coming in in 2-3 months. IT will cost around 500 bucks more but it will be a much better camera. It will most likely use the d300 sensor.

but i'm not saying the d80 isn't a great camera and for the price it's really good now.

only other thing with nikon lens is the "vr"lenses (Vibration Reduction ) this helps with image blur at a higher shutter speed.
