okay - first set a budget that you want to spend on the boat.

Then you need to look around local first. Check the classified ads, the weekly sale books with local classified ads and go to the sporting good store to pick up copies of fishing and boating magazines - they normally have a classified section.

Let people know you are looking, someone may know someone that wants to sell a boat but they have not placed an ad yet.  

EBay is a good place to buy a bargain, but if you are looking at a first boat, you may not get a deal but a floating problem.

Do not jump at the first boat in your price range, look till you find one that meets your needs and wants.

try to find one that is okay condition that somone is selling cheap. i got my runabout for $100. then just clean it up and fix it up. we had ours running by the end of the weekend. we have run it a lot. all weekend almost every weekend in the summer. great boat and great price. just needed some tlc.

First, find out the towing capacity of your truck.  Or if you don't have a tow vehicle yet, pick the boat first then get the truck that can pull it.
