  1. Try looking at Irish Hunters.  They are strong and sturdy and built to carry the load.  They usually stand anywhere from about 16.3 hands to sometimes 17.4.  You could go into the drafts (Clydesdales, Begians or Percherons) but finding the tack to fit them ... you're looking at custom-made and a lot more $$.

I had the joy of riding an Irish Hunter once.  I'm only 5'2" and weigh maybe 100 lbs.  It was hilarious trying to get into the saddle.  I had to lengthen the stirrup to it's lowest level and still needed a push beyond that.  But I tell ya ... what a ride.  Smooth as silk.  The horse hadn't been ridden in over 8 years.  I was the first rider in all that time.  He'd been abandoned and left to rot in a stall.  I spent a month longeing him to get the swelling down in his fetlocks (lack of exercise, poor thing) and then straight out onto the trails.  He was push-button.  And I keep thinking to this day what a shame it was he was so neglected.  He was a champion in his day.  In my heart he remains one.  Like I said, the best ride I've ever had.

  2. Clydesdale

    Thoroughbreds

Stick to Stallions.  But, good luck finding one for 4-5k.  A qualiy horse is going to cost much more not including care.

  3. HEY,

BEING A TRAINER OF RACEHORSES SINCE 1981,I CAN TELL YOU THIS,WHATEVER HORSE YOU CHOSSE SHOULD BE AT LEAST 6-8 TIMES YOUR WEIGHT.SO REMEMBER THIS WHEN BUYING A HORSE,DONT GET A HORSE UNDER 1350 LBS (MIN).IT WILL GO LAME ON YOU AFTER A WHILE.IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SUPPORT YOU LONG TERM.

    SPIDER817...............RIDERS UP

  4. Good Luck!! in finding one.

  5. i've been riding horse for 8 years now and its really not the "bigger the horse, the better it'll hold u" thing, actually, ponies can handle more wieght than horses so i suggust geting a large pony, possibly a quater horse around 14-15 hh.

  6. You need to look into getting a draft horse, or a draft cross, like a Clydesdale/Thoroughbred.   FIRST, LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT HORSES, unless you plan to PAY someone to CARE for the horse full-time.

  7. Maybe you should give the horse a ride.

  8. I have an OTTB.  He has carried ma and my friend with no problem and we are around 160 each.  He is great and well behaved...3 yrs old...In VA BEACH... You will have to come pick him up...Well behaved...$3000ish.  Great for trails... email brilliantcoo@yahoo.com or itsyacheyenne@earthlink.net  The only reason he is going cheap is because we are in a hurry to sell him.  Price is slightl negotiable

  9. Look into draft horses, and draft crosses (a draft quarter horse or draft TB cross would be good for you.)  You should be able to easily get one for 4-5k, it wont be top show quality for that price, but it will be just fine for every day riding, trail riding, etc.

Look on sites like dreamhorse.com, equine.com, agdirect.com and horsetopia.com. On these sites you can search for the type of horse you are looking for, and in your location.

  10. Actually, any good sized horse will. I have an uncle who is around the same size you are and he's gotten on one of our Quarter Horse mare. But if you want something a little bigger try a Thoroughbred/Draft cross. Go to http://www.equinenow.com and you can search horses for sale there!

  11. This is the horse racing section.

  12. Go for a clydesdale man. Youll look cool

  13. At your height and weight, draft is definitely the way to go. Contact some breeders for prospects.

  14. Don't make a horse suffer. Just ride another 300 lb lineman.

  15. I would go with a  clydesdale ....... my friend has one and we do anything and everything with him, jumping, barrel racing, pole bending, stake bend, key hole, speed and control, english and western pleasure, carts, trail riding, anything you want him to do he does it!!
