  1. I'd get a bike with a stiff frame with all cheap components for as cheap as possible (probably made in Taiwan) and then spend the rest of the money on a racing wheelset (unfortunately some wheelsets are just about $1000).  I like the Giant TCRs but if you can't get that then maybe just a GIant OCR.  All other bikes I'd recommend are well over $1000 like a Scott CR1, Cervelo P2k team, Giant TCR T-mobile... etc.  Good luck!

  2. i ride a cheap schwinn prelude $225 and i keep up with the trek guys who spend $3000 i rode 88miles today in 5hrs. a little sunburnt though.

  3. There are many answers to this question. The bicycle business is so competitive today that any two bikes at the same price point are very likely to be equivalent values. Go to your local bike shop and tell them what you want and how much you have to spend. They will match you up with the best bike they have to meet your needs. Test ride the bike. Then go to other bike shops and test what they have to offer. Buy the bike that feels and fits the best. Ignore brand names, marketing hype, and fancy brochures. The bike that fits you best is the one you will enjoy the most, train the most, and do your best in competition.
