I don't want the hockey type boot skate that the ice skate rink rents out. I would like something more feminine. We only have 2 ice skating rinks in this area and they do not sell the skates locally.

From what I've seen online, you buy the boot and the skate separately? Can anyone help me with this?

I'm 23 years old (female) and wear an 8 1/2 dress shoe, 9 running shoe.

  1. I would suggest going to a pro shop to buy skates, with sizing issues from brand to brand of skate, and different models you have to be sized for skates in order to get the proper size. More advanced figure skates are sold with the boot and blade separately, but most beginning and recreational skates are sold in a set. What type of skating are you planning on doing? I would suggest a pair of Riedell skates, they have good skates that are very good quality. Good luck!

  2. Skates usually run abit bigger then your normal shoe size... like for example, my daughter wears size 13 1/2 (girls) shoe, but her skates are about 12 1/2 size (approx. since her's is costume-made) .. and my other daguther wears size 11 1/2 shoes, but her skates are size 11 (Jacksons brand).

Unless you are an active figure skater, I don't think getting the boot and the blade seperately is necessary (it can get very expensive).  Reidell runs abit narrow, and Jacksons run bit wider.  You can even get some used skates from ebay too. search under "ice skates" or "women's figure skates". For a beginner skates, I think you really don't need to spend more then $100 for a pair.. Expensive skates aren't always better for a beginner skaters.. However, if you are a ACTIVE figure skater, then try Reidell Bronze figure skates, they are about $250 to $300... and it comes with blade too.  You can Google Search under "reidell figure skates" and they will give you the lists of links. Good Luck!

  3. you can buy a boot/blade package, which is the best choice if you are looking to jsut skate for fun and dont want to spend a lot of money.

  4. The only time you should buy skates online is if you have already gone to a fitter and know EXACTLY what size and brand of skate to buy.  Skate brands have a huge amount of variety between sizes, and they don't match up to street size. I strongly urge you to find some kind of pro shop and get fitted.  I have seen people order them off of skatebuys.com only to be stuck with skates that don't fit or had to return them.  It's hard to know what a proper fitting skate should feel like when you're new and trying them on in your living room. This is one purchase where it's worth paying the extra money to have an expert fit you.

  5. If you are really looking to buy ice skates on line, I would suggest you go to Bizrate.com and when you get there, use search to find ice skates.  I'm sure you will find more places that sell these skates than you ever expected.
