  1. If you a sks you'll have money lift for ammo.

  2. If this is your first gun you should look into a .22 or something along those lines.

If you dont want to go the .22 route maybe think about an SKS

You can get alot of different pistols for under $400 but I would stick with something smaller for your first gun.Maybe a nice 9mm or .380

  3. If you decide to go the pistol route. I keep recommending the German police trade in P6 (225) by Sig Sauer. They are "THE DEAL" right now.

They can be had for $250-$400 (most seem to go between$325-$375 in stores)and they will go up when they run out of them to import. They are 9mm and have a single stack 8rd mag. Deco-cker, mag release, and slide release are the only controls so it relatively easy to learn. Its Da/Sa mechanism is easier to learn for those used to DA revolvers also.

They tend to have some holster wear but are in good to new condition on the inside. Some of the older ones may have problems with heavier weight bullets (like 147gr), but if you stick with the lighter rounds (124gr and less) you shouldn't have a problem.

The double action pull on these is very heavy. Depending on how you look at it, could be good or bad. It is easily remedied with a 19lb mainspring.

Their slim profile makes them suitable for smaller hands and conceal carry also.

Getting a Sig Sauer in this price range wont last. Get one while you can. If you dont like it, sell it, you will get your money back and more in a year or two, guaranteed.

    Do a search on Gunbroker.com for P225, P6

  4. Look for a used Springfield 9mm xd. Or put in another $10 and get a new one.

  5. Great question. if you want a rifle there are several good answers. One is the SKS that can be purchased used for 200-400 dollars depending on type and condition. the cheaper ones tend to be the larger, heavier types. nearly all SKS rifles have a 10 round magizine well that is non-detachable and legal in places like california. a slightly beter option in my opinion for rifles is a Siaga. Saiga rifle can be bought new for 300-400 dollars, they are available in .223, 7.62x39, and .308 calliber listed in order of power. they have detachable magaizine that are 8 or 10 rounds, and I know of after market magazines that hold 20-30 rounds.

if you want a shotgun. a shotgun may be a beter choice for a first gun because they are easy to use and very versatile. rifles are less suited for personal defense in an urban are because the bullets tend to pass through people, cars, brick walls and then more people. a shogun is less likely to to this and you can also use it for hunting. there are semiautomatic siaga shotguns for 300-400$ that have detachable mnagazines. then there is the venerable mossberg 500 or remington 870. both are cheap pump action shotguns that are very reliable and popular.

For pistols, there arn't very many good choices in that price range. you could buy a used weapon, but if you want a good quality new gun, i cant recomend taurus enough. they sell full size and compact pistols and revolvers for 300-400 dollars. all of them are very high quality, durable, reliable and reletivly inexpensive. the Taurus 24/7 pro won the NRA defensive hand gun of the year award. it is the gun i have and is available in 9mm, 40 s&w and 45 acp. id go with the 40 S&W because it has a good balance of power versus controlability. it will also give you more shots per clip then a .45. Another option would be to buy a high point pistol. high points are extremly cheap (150$) extremly heavy, and from what i hear, they are pretty reliable. a good value, but not as good as a taurus or a used glock.

good luck and remeber, the only two rules you need to follow to not hurt someone is

1 a gun is always loaded

2 always keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction, if the gun is unloaded, see rule one

  6. From the way you worded the question, I'd guess that your sole exposure to "firearms" are airsoft, and bb guns.

You need to start with a good .22 LR rifle.  It is my opinion that a bolt-action, pump, lever-action, or single-shot is better for a beginner to learn firearms safety, good gunhandling practices, and marksmanship.

If you insist on a semi-automatic, in your price range you should look at Marlin Model 60's or Ruger 10/22's.

Learn to handle a rifle before you start on handguns.
