I don't know how to ride but have always wanted a bike. As beginner what should I be looking to get into? I like the looks of the Ninja but I know looks aren't everything. I'm also looking to ride completely safe so I don't nee the most powerful bike out there.

Thanks a bunch!

  1. Before you even start shopping, go take an MSF course. Most community colleges offer it on the weekends. It's like $200 but well worth every penny. You'll meet some cool people, ride some cool bikes, and have lots of fun.

After that you can decide which size bike you'd like to start on. Most people starting on a sport bike go for a used 600CC bike. You should go to a dealership and sit on a few bike to get the feel of them and decide which style suits your body language and frame best. If you got a pot belly like me, the yamaha probably won't be best because it has a high gas tank and longer reach to the grips. Comfort is key but sportbikes don't offer much so get whichever offers the most.

Whatever bike you get, make sure you wear protective gear. helmet, jacket, and boots at a minimum. Practice, practice, practice! be safe, have fun, and don't show off.

My recommendation would be any 600CC from the big four from years 1998 to 2003. $2,000 to $4,000 price range. If anybody mentions a Ninja250R, hit the report abuse button on them.

  2. I would get a used 4 stroke dirt bike and ride it until you are comfortable with the clutch and gas then go take a motorcycle safety course.Good Luck and think safe!!

  3. MY WIFE RIDES A GSXR 600, SO PLEASE DO NOT DO ANYTHING SMALLER THAN THAT. A GOOD STARTER BIKE (AND IT'S LIGHT) IS THE YAMAHA R6. IT'S GOOD FOR BEGINNERS, HAS GREAT POWER, AND HAS A NARROW STANCE, SO PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO LEARN A LOT EASIER ON IT. PLEASE BE SAFE.

  4. I would go with a used old cruiser like a Kawasaki LTD440 or something like that to see if you are really up for riding in traffic.

Then you might know a little more about what kind of bike you really want.

  5. i have a ninja 250 and it is great for a beginner it has just enough power so they are easy to ride and easy to handle so that is what i would get.

  6. I wouldn't listen to people who tell you to get a small bike first. A small or slow bike isn't any safer than a big fast one...they will both get you killed equally, trust me. What matters is that you take it easy while learning...doesn't make too much economic sense to buy a bike just to learn and then have to buy another one becuase the first one isn't fast enough. Try this, buy the biggest and fastest bike you can afford and want. There is no difference from riding a fast bike to riding a "slow" one....That's what the throttle is for, you control it, it doesn't control you. I actually feel that more powerful bikes are easier to ride and learn on because of the fact that they have more torque and are harder to stall. Just take it easy at first 'till you get used to it. Good luck and be safe kid.

PS and don't put a mohawk on your helmet.

  7. Gabriel ..... dude what??? enigne size meens everything when it comes to a first bike.. it not the top speed you have to worry about its the sudden twist of the throttle when you hit a pot hole that throws you over the back (12 oclock).. its also the tight corners. with that heavy bike you'll go right off the road. and its the quick stoping. whats easier to stop a 443 lb. 1k or a 304 lb. ninja 250r think about it. a smaller bike is wayyyy more forgiving than a 600 or 1000.. dont be a squid
