  1. First off, you really don't want to buy one of those receiver/DVD player combos.  They generally don't use high quality parts, they don't have additional inputs for things like your game consoles, satellite/cable box, etc. and none of them are going to have nearly the power you're looking for.

Second, unless your theater room is literally the size of a real movie theater, why do you need so much power?  My receiver is only 700-800 watts, and easily shakes the windows on the other side of my house.  And since you have a smaller TV, you really don't need such a powerful system.

Trust me, you want to buy  you receiver, DVD Player, and speakers separately.  DVD players are cheap - even a good 1080p upscaling DVD player will run less than $100-150.  A 5.1 receiver will run you a $200-400, depending on how many inputs you'd like.  Whatever you do, don't be afraid to splurge on the speakers.  If you listen to music a lot, you may want to purchase your front speakers separately - and get a nice pair.  Otherwise, you can get a set of 5.1 speakers that includes a 10" subwoofer which should be more than enough for you.  Remember,  quality speakers should last you years - even though you swap out your receiver or DVD player for newer components, your speakers should be like pieces of furniture.

    My setup:

upscaling region-free DVD player from Oppo Digital (http://oppodigital.com)  ($150)

    Denon 7.1 receiver ($400)

5.1 speaker set from Definitive Technology ($800)
