The apartments in Rome are extremely expensive. If you are looking to be in the center of town they are more than you would pay for a 3 bedroom home in the states. You are looking at  $500,000.+ for a small apt most likely with one bath and on the 3-4th floor. As far as the economy - they live very differently than we do. Few people have dryers, you cannot drive in the center of Rome unless you live in the center and get a permit, everything is very expensive. Anything electronic if you bought an ipod here for $300 it woudl be 300 euro over there.  Tourism is a big part of their economy.
