  1. I agree with Jason G.  Go the gift certificate route.  There are so many different brands of clubs of varying styles that what works well for one golfer may not suit another.  The best thing for him to do is to go into a good golf retailer and try different demo clubs.

  2. I'd get him a gift certificate instead and allow him to purchase them with it.

  3. It is very difficult to buy golf clubs for another person. Much of what you purchase would depend on your budget. You can get a cheap complete set of clubs for under $300. Or, you can purchase a single club for over $300. I would suggest you go out shopping without him and see what is available and what you can afford. You can see low end golf equipment at sporting goods stores like Big 5 or more expensive (and a wider range) at places like Golfsmith (Golfsmith.com). You might ask his friends to quiz him to see what he would like. IF this is really his first set you probably won't go wrong with a lower end $ set. However you may open a can of worms and turn him into the average golfer who wants to purchase the next greatest thing coming out. I wish you the best. IF you become a golf widow you might suggest he buy you a set next year. :-)

  4. If hes athletic and can swing fast, make sure you get STIFF FLEX shafts, not regular flex.  And you may want to go with an ADULT set, the ones you mentions are for jr's, ages 9-12 and would be impossible for a grown man.  As far as brand goes, Callaway and Taylormade are about as good as it gets.  I would go inexpensive for a first time set, some people get a set, then hate it, and stop.  If he likes it you can always sell them and upgrade later.  A typical set is 3-9 irons, Pitching Wedge, Sand Wedge, Driver, 3 wood, and putter.  That makes 12 clubs, and you can (according to PGA rules) only carry 14, which means you can add 2 more clubs of choice...maybe a 2 iron, 5 wood, Flop wedge.  Your best bet would be to go to a golf store and tell them what you are looking for, just dont let them talk you into the most expensive set, and they WILL try.  Hope this helps

  5. Isnt that a junior set? unless your husband is really short, he'd be better off getting adults clubs.

Seriously, take him down to the golf store. If you're going to splash out on clubs, its worth getting them fitted. If he's not between 5'7 to 5'11 standard clubs may not 'fit' him well.

For first timers, its not crucial to get a whole set in one go, so make sure you get a decent set of irons first (He'll be able to practice with them before moving on to getting woods and a driver later on) and maybe a putter. The shop should be able to advise on shaft flex but I suspect a newbie will want a regular flex to compensate for slower swing speed.

Personally I'd recommend Callaway's Big Bertha irons - theyre great clubs for beginners as they are very forgiving and also they hold their resale value if it doesnt work out so well :)
