  1. Ruffino (Italian)

  2. California wines from the Napa / Sonoma Valleys are all wonderful.  Mondavi and Beringer are great wineries.  Mondavi for red (cabernet, merlot & zinfandel) and Beringer for white (chardonnay, reisling).   They aren't terribly expensive and you should be able to find them wherever you are........

  3. I agree with TX2step and I would also suggest Clos du Bois and Sutter Home

If you want to go all out, French wines from Burgunday and Bordeaux are amazing.

  4. Guests?

It depends on where you live as many wines are strictly regional due to State enforced export laws. This is most apparent in New York.

If you live in New York, I would recommend literally anything from the Paumonauk vinyard.

If you'd like a dry white, Santa Margharetta Pinot Grigio is very good (and the considerably cheaper Mezzcorona Pinot Grigio is at least as good).

Mondavi and Berenger are terrible wines. Sorry to disagree with your other responders but, I find their products to be... difficult to consume.

Look for the Francis Coppola wines, the St. Francis wines. If you want a Californian, Cakebread is a very good choice for a Sav. Blanc.
