  1. Well one personal laptop is allowed in Indian customs.

You will still have to carry the receipts for the personal one.

They may charge customs duty for the other one, try getting an official letter from your employer specifying the laptopndetails and mentioning that it was given to you for work reasons. I'm not sure though if they will accept that as a proof that its not urs :)

My husband always faces the same problem. But each one of us carries a laptop as a personal item and go through customs without any Qs asked :) You may try that if you have any friend travelling with you!

  2. You are allowed to carry only one lap top free of duty.  You have to either pay duty for the second lap top or submit declaration that you will take

    back the same while returning.

  3. You can definitely take it with you. Take to any place?

  4. I have been posted with the American Embassy in India for 3 years, and I am well aware of this bizarre rule, but to be honest I have never been bothered by customs concerning that. I regularly travel to the US (To go back to DC) and I two have two laptops; a personal and a office one. They will probably not ask you to declare it, but if they do simply say you have only one. As long as you are carrying both on your person (as in your carry on), then there should be no problem. Also don't fret about it. The story is an extreme case. We never had anyone at the embassy encounter this problem, and I have never had any friends have this problem either.

    Good luck and don't worry.

  5. Yes you are allowed to take 1 laptop per person.
