  1. You should be like "Boss, you better let me change my job from full to half time or i'll kick you right in the nuuuts"

  2. Dear Mr/Ms. So and So:

I am requesting to switch my assignment from full-time to a part-time assignment. The reason for my request is (insert reason here). Your cooperation would be much obliged.

    Best regards,

    Your name here

  3. "As of 8-30-08, I will no longer allow be able to work a full-time schedule at XYZ, Inc.  I am available for part time hours, and would very much like to continue my employment at this company.  Please let me know at your earliest convenience if this is a possibility."

Keep it short and sweet.  Your boss will obviously need to speak to you in person, so there's no need to include a bunch of details.

  4. Before you write a formal letter, discuss the possibility tentatively with your boss and ask what options might be available. You can't "tell" him/her, you will have to request it. If you go to half time, they will have to find another qualified person willing to work half time, and that would be a big inconvenience for them. They may just decide to let you go, since it will be easier to find a full-time employee to replace you than a half-time employee to supplement you. Be very aware that you could lose your job over this, and be certain that you can afford to before you talk to your boss. You might want to remind them that they will save money, since half-time employees are not eligible for benefits like health coverage and paid sick leave or personal leave. Or maybe you hadn't thought of that?
