Veteran batsman Chris Gayle has expressed the desire to make significant contributions to the West Indies team, as he returns to the national side after a 15-month hiatus for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against England, scheduled to begin on June 16
in Southampton.
“I want to contribute more. Hopefully get a few more centuries for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760,” said Gayle – a veteran of 228 Tests, with 19 centuries to his name. “The most important thing is to try and get a couple of series wins. Because the pressure has been there.
Even when I wasn't playing, the pressure has still been there outside. I am still a part of it whichever way you look at it.”
Gayle spent 15 months out of the national team owing to a disagreement with the West Indies Cricket Board, which led to his being dropped from the national squad. The fairly public spat took place after the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup 2011, when Gayle was not included
in the limited-overs squad for a series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755.
In an interview with a Jamaican radio station, the 32-year-old hit out at the board for having failed to provide effective treatment for his injuries, and slammed head coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ottis-Delroy-Gibson-c80358 as a “user”, who had mentally tormented the West Indies players during
their World Cup campaign.
The controversial interview led to his being sidelined by the national selectors for a significant period of time, before an agreement was reached between the two parties earlier this year – Gayle pulled out of a deal with County club http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 to officially
make himself available for national selection.
A recent meeting was held between the left-hander and the WICB, also attended by Gayle’s representative http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Julian-Robert-Hunte-c69628, WICB director Elson Crick, the Board's legal officer Alanna Medford were present, as well as Ralph Gonsalves
(Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines) and Baldwin Spencer (Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda).
Following the meeting, the agenda of which was the clear up “residual matters”, Gayle was officially included in the ODI squad for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 series.
Expressing his delight at being back in the national team, the hard-hitting batsman claimed that he was taking his time to get back into the zone, after scoring a 34 off 30 in a tour match http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Middlesex-c817 on June 13, which the Windies went on to win by a massive
228-run margin.
“Once you get settled in everything will come back to normal,” he said. “You get that feel again in any environment which you have been out of for a year. Once you get back that feeling ... things will be much easier.”
