  1. Over time, the data on your hard drive gets scattered. Taking the time to defrag computers puts your data back into sequential order, making it easier for Windows to access it. As a result, the performance of your computer will improve if you defrag the computer.

You can defrag by using one of the following methods...

    1) Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Defrag

    2) Start > Run > type "dfrg.msc" without quotes..

You can also download third-party software which for more robust options and features. Auslogics Registry Defrag and Defraggler are the best free registry defrag programs. Defraggler is brought to you by the same company (Piriform) that makes CCleaner - a great program.

  2. 1) go to my computer.

right click the hard disk and go to properties.

click tools tab at top and then go to defragment.

    2) software as it is installed is placed into open areas on the hard disk where items have been deleted from.  These spaces are often not big enough and the computer goes on to the next open spot.  this slows the computer down when it goes  back to read the program because it has to jump from one part to another.  The defragment takes the bits and pieces and puts them back together.  If you have used up to much of your hard disk it cannot perform a defragment because it takes the bits and pieces copys them to a temporary spot untill it has enough free space for the whole file.

3 You should defrag once ever 2 - 3 months depending on your deletion and add rate
