I want to do a mario bros cake with fondat help?

so my nephew birthday is coming and he loves mario bros. i will like to try my first cake with him. but the thing is that i want 2 do it with fondant but they say that butter cream is better than Wilton's fondant i just don't know how to do it and then i want to add things like flags and all that stuff like the game but do i use gum paste or fondant ,n can i put a filling on the cake so many ? sorry help please thank u ..

  1. Fondant goes over your buttercream - it is not a replacement.  If you will notice, on the FoodNetwork when they were showing the Disney World weddings, they actually removed the fondant before serving the cake.

    Ice your cake as normal and then lay your rolled out fondant on the cake and smooth it out with the fondant tools you can get at cake supply stores or your hands.  

    Fondant comes in boxes of different colors at most cake suppy stores or you could color your own by folding food coloring into the fondant.  I buy the variety packs because a little goes a long way and as long as you keep it airtight it lasts a long time.  

    With patience and a good knife you can put any picture you want on top of your cake with fondant.
