  1. I'm a professional EE and I work in the defense department and I'm also going to be starting my Master's this coming January.

Personally I'd focus on signal or image processing. There are tons of applications for both. And with the current climate the U.S. is going in(Defense and Intelligence) there are thousands of jobs available in both.

    Good Luck

  2. EE, at the university where I studied, curriculum-wise was almost identical to Computer Engineering (they branched out into separate directions last two semesters). Nowadays, that is basically the focus of EE, especially if you're interested in the R&D side of things, rather than the boring (albeit quite often well paid) consulting version.

Most important question right now is do you have an undergrad degree in EE? If so, I am sure one of your professors has left at least one unanswered question over the past four or five years. Take whatever fascinates you and set out to get to the bottom of it through your thesis. Courses you take should simply reflect that and help you in the research.

On another note, if you don't have your undergrad yet... go get it first. Cross the grad school bridge when you get to it. About 90% of people who studied with me, who were absolutely convinced in freshmen years they would get PhD's, ended up running far far away from school right after graduation. Perspectives change. And four years of an engineering degree is not an easy task by any means.
