  1. If you want to perform autopsies, then you'll have to become a pathologist, which is a medical doctor who has specialized in the study of disease and its diagnosis.  If you're a pathologist in a hospital, you won't do many autopsies, as they aren't performed with the frequency in past years.  However, you can become a medical examiner.  An ME performs autopsies on all criminal cases and other suspicious deaths.  If you go to www.ascp.org, you can find out a lot of information about pathology.  There is also a good article on that site about Dr. Garavaglia, which might be interesting to you.

If you want to assist at autopsies, then consider becoming a medical technologist or a pathologist's assistant.  This will require about 4-5 years of college and can be a very interesting and rewarding field of work.

People who have no exposure to laboratory science or pathology have no idea just how interesting the work is.  It takes a person of intelligence who loves solving puzzles.

By the way, I was an administrative director of a hospital laboratory for many years and our pathologist (clinical director) was a female.

  2. learn medicine then, and go to a decent uni - and put in alot of effort.  It takes alot of time and money to get there, oh and its underpaid and there aren't enough jobs to go about either - all the best anyways
