  1. This is The Times university rankings for History, for 2009. Congratulations on being the first in your family to going to university too. Neither of my parents went uni and they've worked so hard so we get the opportunity too. So why not aim high, and try and get into a good uni for history.

You should go around to some open days for universities that way you can see whether you'll like the place you'll be studying in for the next 3 years. You can pretty much choose whatever a-levels you want, I recommend subjects that you will enjoy, know that you will get good grades in them and possibly history as  one of your choices - you don't necessarily need history a-level to get into uni. Uni is very expensive, they generally charge the full amount for the course, this year its £3145, try not to let this put you off, as you can take out a student loan even though it's a lot of money to be getting into debt, you can pay it off a bit at a time, and only after you're earning over £15,000. Undergraduate courses are generally around 3 years, depending on what you choose. You might try and do a course that has a sandwich year, where you work abroad possibly. Most of all uni is fun, it's were you're going to be making the friends you have for life, I imagine!!

  2. That all depends

    1. never dun history im gessin oxford or cambridge.

2.to get into oxford or cambridge at least 3 A grades at Alevel a lot of money or an amazing tallent. if u wanted to go for a lesser uni u cood probally get in to leeds with 3Bs, man met 2Bs and a C and a uni college with all Cs. depends on demand

    3. about 8 grand a year incuding living most courses last 3 years u do the math.

    4. around 3 years for a degree but u can do honors, doctors & others which may last up 4 to 6years altogether.

    5. i massive party when u first start u do a bit of work and get smashed up most of the other time. make loads of mates, and catch so many jokes. lectures r alright u can sit and listen or just day dream. u dont get in trouble for not attending like at school. they treat u like an adult. spend the summers abroad doing new things making friends. really an amazing experince. wood recomend living halls

  3. According to The Times Good University Guide Cambridge is the best for history, followed by Durham, Kings' College London, Oxford and London School of Economics. These are very competitive universities though and there is no need to aim for these if you don't think you can get in. Take a look at the league table for history: http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/tol_gug/...

You will obviously need to take history A level, and at least two others. The other two subjects don't normally really matter that much but it will depend on the university. The grades you need will also depend on the university so you should have a look on www.ucas.ac.uk to see what some of them are asking for.

Tuition fees cost around £3000 a year, but don't panic because everyone gets a student loan which pays off their fees until they're earning over £15,000 a year when you have to start paying it back. There are also other grants and loans available to help you out at university. You can find out more about that here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAnd...

In England and Wales a bachelor's degree (the first degree you do) normally takes three years to complete, and four years in Scotland.

I can't really tell you about what uni is like yet, as I don't start until next September, but I can tell you it is very different to school and you will have a lot more independence.

  4. I went to Swansea uni to study history. They were one of the top universities in the UK to study this subject. I believe that they came about fourth in the country behind Cambridge, Oxford and Durham.

An A level in History is a must really and it is helpful to have English Literature (not necessary though) as a lot of the work involves reading and writing. Any other third A level would also be required by a top university. Politics is a good one if you can do it.

Costs vary per uni, in England and Wales you have to pay tuition fees of around £3,000 a year plus you would need living expenses. Scotland doesn't charge tuition fees but I believe you have to live there to get this benefit. I also believe that Wales offers grants to students to help cover the costs of studying.

The usual length of course to obtain degree in History is three years.

University is the best time of your life. You make great friends and have a great social life as well as developing your own personality as you stand on your own two feet.

I would recommend it to anyone as you will have the time of your life as well as gaining a very important qualification that helps to offer opportunities for future employment.
