  1. Roller blades are more fun and probably less dorky. There are really expensive roller blades out there but any cheap, comfortable ones will work. I got a pair for around $25.

  2. For outdoor use, I'd say that the choice is easy.  Inline skates are faster, ride smoother, and are safer.

The narrow wheels are more likely to kick out small debris than the wide wheels of quads.

The larger diameter of the wheels also roll over obstacles easier and are smoother over bumps.

The longer distance between the front and rear wheels help keep you from tripping over objects.

Quad skates are much more manueverable.

The two major brands of rec/fitness skates are K2 and Rollerblade.  All of their skates are good quality.  There are some other brands that make good skates and a lot of "no name" discount store brand that tend to make very cheap but low quality skates.

For a good pair of skates expect to spend $100 or more.

Try on every pair that you can find in your price range.  Different models are shaped to fit different feet.  You want a skate that fitsnug all around your feet without crushing your toes.  They should become part of your feet with no movement of the feet inside the skates.

Larger wheels are better (the racers are now typically using 100mm or 110mm).

    Aluminum frames are better.

If anyone out there thinks that the modern Roller Derby is scripted like the old version, you should go see it.

The women are serious about winning and do a lot of training to be able to skate well while trying to push their way through the pack or to block the jammer from getting through.

  3. It depends on if you feel like you will want to do anything other than just skating outdoors.  I have roller skates (I am on a roller derby league) and find them way more comfortable and maneuverable than roller blades.  I think both options look pretty dorky, honestly.  You can take both to the roller rink, too, if you want to skate indoors during inclement weather.

Inlines typically look more like ski boots.  They are higher and firmer to give you more ankle support.  Quad skates are usually lower (unless you get artistic boots) and look more like sneakers.  You can actually get sneakers that have been turned into quad skates (like these, though you may be able to find them cheaper elsewhere: http://www.conniesskateplace.com/socrour... ) which I imagine are probably very comfortable.

Whatever you decide I'm sure you will have a blast!
