Have you looked into volunteering for short-term special events? I travel a lot so a long-term commitment doesn't work for me, either. I often volunteer to help plan events or even just volunteering at the event itself. Depending on where you live, look up major charities (ie: Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke, etc) and email or phone to ask about volunteer opportunities at their events. Unfortunately, most organizations won't take volunteers if you can only commit to 3 months, so events/planning may be your best bet.
